The Settlement Agreement is final with the adjudication by the U.S. District Court. Despite an amendment lasting 15 years, AirFair will not be disbanding. We believe that a watchdog airport organization is essential for the community.
The group will continue to meet regularly and maintain a website with postings of upcoming meetings. That said, this is the last email AirFair will send. It is an expense that we cannot justify, but one of course we can begin again, if necessary.
For 15 years with your support, both financial and political, we have been an active voice in the community. Thank you for helping us bring the airport issue to the attention of the community and its leaders.
The current John Wayne Airport Settlement Agreement was set to expire in 2015. With the new Settlement Agreement, the amendment will last until December 31, 2030 and the curfew until December 31, 2035. Details of the Settlement Agreement are listed in a table below.
Four signers on the Settlement Agreement, which was initially signed in 1985, worked on this proposed agreement for two years trying to come to an agreement acceptable to the community, the city, the county, the airport, and the airlines. The four signers were Stop Polluting Our Newport "SPON," Airport Working Group, Newport Beach, and the County of Orange.
(AirFair was organized in 2002 following the announcement of an extensive expansion at JWA by the negotiators of that amendment. Several members of the AirFair founding group were also board members of SPON.)
The Proposed Project, Alternatives and Final EIR, including public comments submitted on the Draft EIR and responses to those comments, were presented to the Orange County Board of Supervisors on September 30, 2014. The Board unanimously approved the proposed John Wayne Airport (JWA) Settlement Agreement Amendment, and the Court adjudicated the amendment in October.
